Biography

Clayton is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of the Western Cape. He earned his MSc with distinction at the University of Cape Town. His PhD research concentrates on generalising unified spatio-temporal modelling in graph neural networks for urban traffic forecasting. Notably, he was selected for the 2022 Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) — an honour awarded to just 200 young researchers in mathematics and computer science globally. Recognised for excellence in learning and teaching, he was nominated in 2025 by the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences for the South African National University Teaching Awards (NUTA) in the Beginner Teacher category. Beyond his core research, Clayton actively contributes to the academic community through conference organisation, program committee service, and international collaborations, including the University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP). He is also 1 of 5 AI Champions nominated to deliver the AI Research Foundations course at UWC across 2027–2028, in partnership with Google, Google DeepMind, AIMS, and the FATE Foundation.

Research

Clayton has successfully supervised numerous research projects at the Honours level, with several of his students going on to present their work at Southern African Conference for AI Research (SACAIR). His supervision centres on the methodological evolution and real-world application of spatio-temporal AI for graph-based environments.
