Prof. William Tucker leads BANG, a research group that co-designs and analyses ICT solutions for marginalised and poverty-stricken communities; with the communities themselves. BANG projects include Zenzeleni which is South Africa’s only community-owned and run rural ISP; and SignSupport, an app suite co-designed with and for Deaf communities to empower them to communicate with hearing people in their own language, sign language, e.g. for pharmaceutical instruction and diabetes self-management. We call this work Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) and we are interested in social, technical, economic and legal aspects of such efforts. Prof. Tucker lectures ICT4D at Honours, and HCI (human computer interface) at 3rd year. He is an Associate Editor for ITID.
