Building Rest API’s on AWS Event

Jessica Randall Events, News event, talk

On Friday, March 24th, 2023, I had the opportunity to host an event entitled “Building REST APIs on AWS” for UWC students in Lab E2 in the CAMS Building. The goal of this event was to introduce the attendees to Electrum Payments, their client base, the technologies they use, and the internships available for students, as well as the quickest and easiest way to build their Proof-of-Concept using AWS Lambdas.

The event was attended by eight people, and we were privileged to meet Willie Macharia, Jans Rautenbach, and Teegan O’ Gorman from Electrum Payments. Jans kicked off the event by introducing Electrum Payments to the audience, and Willie followed by presenting the technical side of things. He demonstrated how to build a banking application using AWS and then test it later on Postman.

The talk provided valuable insights and was inspiring for everyone present. We learned new things about AWS services, which was the most valuable aspect of the event. We also learned about Electrum Payments, a Cape Town-based company, and the potential job opportunities and internships for students. Additionally, we discovered the free resources available to students through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

As this was our first event, there were some areas for improvement. The event was interactive and required more time, and I should have asked the audience to create AWS accounts beforehand and provided a step-by-step guide to do so.

Overall, I am pleased with how the event turned out despite the challenges. The small audience was engaged and actively participated throughout the event, and I felt inspired and encouraged by the content presented.

If you are a second or third-year developer looking for internships, I encourage you to check out the opportunities available at Electrum Payments.
